Last month, I packed my gear and headed to Perth for something I’ve wanted to do for a long time—a mentorship with Laura from Lalu Photography. (https://laluphoto.com.au)
It’s hard to put into words what this mentorship meant to me, but I’ll start here: Laura is, in my eyes, the absolute epitome of art in photography. Her work is raw, emotional, intuitive, and masterfully intentional. Every frame she creates feels like a painting—where light, soul, and honesty collide.
The mentorship spanned an entire month, with a powerful one-on-one shoot that brought everything together. Being guided by Laura in real time, watching how she sees light, directs with ease, and pulls connection out of quiet moments—it was like a masterclass in storytelling through stillness.
But more than just technique, I learnt things that shifted the way I see my own work. I learnt:
How to slow down and trust my vision
The importance of letting people simply be, rather than making them perform
That art and business can hold hands when you're rooted in purpose
How to push past comfort and let imperfection become part of the beauty
Why emotional depth always beats trendy aesthetics
What I took home with me was the kind of learning that sinks into your bones and shifts how you see the world.
It reignited my passion for what I do and reminded me why I started photographing people in the first place.
Laura, thank you for your generosity, your wisdom, and your art. This mentorship changed me, and I’ll carry it with me in every frame I create.
